World Earth Day, Every Day

Trees & the Ego. Id, Eik, Eros, Ego.

Whenever I feel inflated pride, I think of a tree — of how marvellous and generous and unassuming they are — and I breathe more steadily and ground myself. Whenever I feel all lowly and shrivelled up, I also think of a tree — of how powerful their presence is, their thick and strong roots, their ever-growing, agile branches as they reach towards the sun in the sky and stretch towards the centre of the soil — and I expand my breath and regain awe.

Their roots search and soak up water; they take what they need. They provide shade and breath and food and wisdom; they give so that we can receive. But it's only from their taking that they can give so much, and it's only from their giving that they, too, receive such love.

I love trees, be they mini or majestic, evergreen or bare. This is a love note to trees, to thank them for their care.

Love, R
