Cover Art for All Other, Together

Artist: Dawnika To

Description and purpose: When I found Dawnika's multifunctional picnic mat garment, I knew she was the right person for the cover — not only for her skill and creativity with her fabric art, but because of her focus on and love of the natural elements. All Other, Together is a celebration of all beings integrated equally from and with nature; it's an anti-human-centric celebration of life, to celebrate what's unique and to cherish what unites. Having the cover woven with natural textures in honour of the earth feels right. A favourite book of mine when I was little was The Rainbow Zebra. I loved the tactility of it and wanted the cover for All Other to evoke a sensory experience too — for it to be a fabric collage with rich textures and beading to present the beauty of the tangible diversity of our shared world. Once all the images for each page are complete, Dawnika and I will review ideas for the cover together to see how they each can be woven into the piece — always with the fundamental organic textures of the sky, soil, and plants.

Welcome, Dawnika. I look forward to creating something beautiful together. Rose
